I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides the
student with a hospital based rotation through head and neck radiology,
with participation in interpretation sessions, under the supervision
of the head and neck radiologist. The types of images to be reviewed
include those produced by C.T., M.R.I., nuclear medicine and ultra-sound.
II. SYNOPSIS OF GOALS
The student will be familiar
with the production of images using C.T., M.R.I. and other advanced
modalities, and be able to interpret standard products of such modalities,
to the level expected of an oral and maxillofacial radiologist.
III. COURSE OUTLINE
The student is assigned to
the head and neck radiology rotation at the University of Iowa Hospitals
and will undertake such activities as assigned by the head and neck
radiologist or his resident. Such activities may include the making,
supervision of making and/or the interpretation of images in the head
and neck region, under supervision.
IV. METHODOLOGY
The appropriate medical/dental
literature will be reviewed as needed and assigned.
V. PRE-REQUISITES AND/OR
CO-REQUISITES
A. Pre-requisites
Arrangement with and approval
of the Course Director.
B. Co-requisites
Enrollment in a graduate
or specialty level radiology program of study in dentistry .
VI. BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVES
The student will be able
to

describe how the various
imaging modalities function.

|
interpret diagnostic images
of the head and neck, with emphasis on the maxillofacial region,
produced by such modalities.

|
decide when such imaging
modalities would be appropriate in the investigation of specific
patients.

VII. MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION
The student will be evaluated
on an ongoing basis to determine if (s)he is progressing in his (her)
ability to meet the behavioral objectives. In the event that doubt exists,
passing a formal oral and/or written examination will be required.
